The Year of Gearing Up

31 12 2014

While I will not say that 2014 was an outstanding year personally, I will not necessarily call it a dud, either. Yes, things have been pretty much on an even keel, but that is not to say that it lacked enthusiasm. Au contraire, there were many times that made my 2014 exciting — the challenges of my job (believe me when I say #ilovemyjob, there are just moments/people/stuff that make it harder to), the travels and dining experiences (my very first out-of-the-country trip to Malaysia was pure awesome), and basically learning and trying out new things (all those condo-unit tripping were indeed fun). This year was probably a set-up for the great and significant things bound to approach my way soon. And I am geared up for those possibilities. And so I am making a vow for the new year.

gearing up

Ngayong 2015, #BYAHEpamore! Explore and experience. Countless opportunities will arise. Take on at least one. You never know, it may just be it. If it suits you, great! If it doesn’t, well, you have one fun story to tell. So really, what have you got to lose?

Ngayong 2015, #KAINpamore! Gain and soak it all in. Every thing that comes your way is a blessing or a blessing-in-disguise. Maybe not immediately, but all these will come in handy. And when that moment happens, you have an arsenal of skills and familiarities waiting to be utilized.

Ngayong 2015, #PUSHpamore! Do something that makes you happy. Fall in love with it. Fight and struggle with it. Find new ways to make it work again. And then fall further in love — and this time, with deeper passion and understanding. Nothing ever goes perfectly smooth. If it does, you do not love it intensely enough.

The first half of the decade is done and over with. If you’re on your way to harvesting the products of your efforts, congratulations for a job well done. I wish you continued success. If not, you can still do it. We will do it. Because according to Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, and OneRepublic, “It’s a sky full of stars, and thinking out loud, I swear I lived.” (Gusto niyo yung ipinilit kong pagtagpi-tagpiin ang mga song title? Hahaha! Basta, alam niyo na yun!) 😉

HAVE A JOLLY 2015, EVERYONE!!!

The Year of Gaining Clarity

31 12 2013

They say in life, there comes a time when that dream you dream becomes that thing you do. It’s true. I am most fortunate and appreciative to have found my spot. Thank goodness for the wondrous pair of eyeglasses that 2013 handed me.

clarity

I have recognized my God-given talent and skills, which thankfully complement my interests and the job I have. Some people don’t get to do what pleases them. Others don’t even have the slightest idea of what they really want. And I get paid for doing something I actually enjoy doing (writing and watching TV). I will forever be grateful for this. (Kapusong totoo! Naks!)

I have discerned which people in my life are in it for the long haul, willing to stick it out until the very end, and which ones I’m happy to show the exits to since their first instinct is to bail at the first whiff of smoke. (Akala siguro nila may sunog. Hindi nila alam, nag-iihaw lang ako ng barbecue para pagsaluhan namin. Eh gusto palang umalis, eh di go. Ipag-eempake ko pa sila.)

I have come to the terms with the fact that I am a very good friend. (Nakakatuwa nga raw kasi akong kasama. Pero hindi ako bitter, pramis. Haha!)

Disappointments will come. And yes, they will go, too. So don’t be afraid when moments of uncertainty and skepticism arise because they are just that –- moments. Even in times of slump and desperation, all is not lost. You will snap out of it because these are just phases everybody goes through. Learn to roll and learn your role. Only after you’ve accepted what is real will you gain closure. After closure comes clarity. And after clarity comes conviction.

Things around us will continue to change, and at times we will falter, but faith will keep us grounded. Steady. Firm. In order for us to bounce back and make a higher leap the next time. Just know in your heart that something good will come out of it. And don’t let that passion to succeed go.

That is what basically 2013 inculcated in me. So here I am now, 2014. Better than ever. Ready to take things a notch higher than usual and do them with flare in more ways than one.

They say in life, there comes a time when that dream you dream becomes that thing you do. I pray it comes true for you, too.

Have a JOLLY 2014, one and all! May the clarity and conviction be with us!

2013-2014

The 5th Annual Jolly Awards

31 12 2013

I’m proud and happy to be doing this for the fifth straight year. Here we go.

When my Internet is down, I forget that the rest of my computer still works Award (Most-Liked Website)

Haha.

I will follow you Award (Most-Liked Internet Personality)

I’m looking at you, ALE fans). Team Hair Clips, Team Blush On, Team Water Jug, bentang-benta!

Jamich – Strike two na sa akin ‘tong dalawang [insert expletives here] ‘to, eh. Last year, umepal sila nang mamatay si Dolphy. Ngayong taon, pinakinabangan pa nila ang nangyaring pananalasa ng bagyong Yolanda para sumikat. Thoughtless. Tasteless.

#ALLCAPSPARAINTENSE – Mas may impact, eh.

Dumudugo na ang tenga ko pero hindi ko matigilang pakinggan Award (Most-Liked Songs)

Pink (feat. Nate Ruess)’s Just Give Me A Reason – “We’re not broken, just bent. And we can learn to love again.” True. Two dynamite vocalists collaborating. Just wow.

KZ Tandingan’s Scared To Death – “I’m scared to death
. Falling in love with you
, I’m scared to death.
There’s nothing that I can’t do.
I’m scared to death.
What if you won’t be around anymore?” It’s that leap you are so afraid to take because of the uncertainty. Scary shit, indeed. And KZ Tandingan’s voice is just so haunting.

Zedd (feat. Foxes)’s Clarity – “If our love’s insanity, why are you my clarity?” “If you pull then I’ll push too deep and I’ll fall right back to you.” Just imagine. You’ll understand.

Sa kabila ng short attention span ko, nagawa kong pakinggan ang buong album Award (Most-Liked Albums)

Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs 2013 – This is actually a great selection of songs. 2013 was an excellent year for songwriting competitions. And I’m glad that mainstream OPM is making good noise again. Tracks to listen to: Anong Nangyari Sa Ating Dalawa, If You Ever Change Your Mind, Kahit Na, and Scared To Death

Lorde’s Pure Heroine – It’s fresh, it’s cozy, and it’s addictive. And she’s only 17. What the fuck was I doing when I was her age? Definitely not whipping out such an amazing CD. Tracks to listen to: 400 Lux, Royals, Team, and A World Alone

On The Job – According to myself: “On The Job is as good as advertised. Gritty, gripping! Lakas makakabog ng dibdib. Astig si Joel Torre, pero MVP ko si Joey Marquez! Wuhooow!” Totoo yan. At paninindigan ko yan hanggang sa huling hininga ko. Wow. :))

Gravity – Sabi ko matapos ko itong mapanood: “Sa wakas, I got to see Gravity. How can a thriller like this have so much heart? Ang galing! And career-best performance from Sandra Bullock, hands down.” Totoo pa rin yan. Not sure about its Oscar chances yet, pero may laban naman ang pelikulang ito.

May bagong pupuno ng external hard drive ko Award (Most-Liked New TV Shows)

The Following – Otherwise known as “The Cardiac Arrest,” it follows the life of former FBI agent Ryan Hardy (played by Kevin Bacon) and his attempts to recapture his nemesis — serial killer Joe Caroll (incredibly portrayed by James Purefoy). You’ve gotta love the surprising twists, the complex characters (most especially Carroll’s killer minions, headed by Emma/Denise), and the Edgar Allan Poe references. Episodes to watch: “Pilot” (Episode 1), “Chapter 2” (Episode 2), “The Siege” (Episode 5), “The Fall” (Episode 6), “Welcome Home (Episode 8), and “The End Is Near” (Episode 14).

The Goldbergs – It’s a huge throwback to the ’80s! A simple series about a  family depicted through the video recordings shot and collected by the youngest Goldberg, Adam (who happens to be the creator of the show). It never ceases to tug the right strings to tickle the heart. Episodes to watch: “The Circle Of Driving” (Episode 1), “Daddy Daughter Day” (Episode 2), “Mini Murray” (Episode 3), and “Call Me When You Get There” (Episode 7).

The Crazy Ones – The new CBS comedy about the dynamic world of advertising, features a talented  and likable ensemble lead by Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and James Wolk. It’s a David E. Kelley show, so expect those hints of pain covered beneath heartfelt speeches and declarations, popular guest stars, and a wonderful selection of music.  Episodes to watch: “Pilot” (Episode 1), “The Spectacular” (Episode 2), “Hugging The Now” (Episode 6), and “Sidney, Australia” (Episode 7).

Hindi ka nanonood nito?! [Insert perplexed look here.]/Oo, nanonood pa rin ako nito./Season ___ na, pero humabol ka! Award (Most-Liked Returning TV Shows):

Veep – US Vice-President Selina Meyer and her crazy staff are back! For the second season, the show delves deeper into the veep’s personal life and we get to know more about the people working with her. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a comedy genius and she is surrounded by equally stellar supporting cast members. Episodes to watch: “Midterms” (Season 2 Episode 1), “Signals” (Season 2 Episode 2), “Running” (Season 2 Episode 9), and “DC” (Season 2 Episode 10)

The Good Wife – Now on its fifth year, this legal drama becomes a must-watch for me again. Just like Julianna Margulies’s Alicia Florrick, the show is kicking ass this season. Kudos also goes to the guest stars who make the show even more interesting to follow: Melissa George, Ben Rappaport, and Jason O’Mara. Episodes to watch: “Everything Is Ending” (Season 5 Episode 1), “Outside The Bubble” (Season 5 Episode 4), “Hitting The Fan” (Season 5 Episode 5), and “The Decision Tree” (Season 5 Episode 10)

The Office series finale – While I still believe the show should have ended when Michael Scott (Steve Carell) left, seeing this hilarious mockumentary wrap it all up was still rather sad. Because as Michael puts it: “Goodbyes are a bitch.” And I will definitely miss these lovable looneys: Jim, Pam, Dwight, Angela, Stanley, Phyllis, Kevin, Meredith, Oscar, Erin, Ryan, Kelly, Creed, Darryl, Toby, Andy. And thank you for the nine wonderful years of employment, Dunder Mifflin, Inc.

“I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good ol’ days before you’ve actually left them.” –Andy Bernard, The Office

the office

Other series finales: 30 RockDexter, The Big C, and Breaking Bad – Wow. I just realized I had to say goodbye to a lot of TV shows and characters this year.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Golden Globes, Seth MacFarlane hosting the Oscars, and Neil Patrick Harris hosting the Tonys – They all nailed it. Thanks to them, three-hour award shows became a lot less tiresome. 2013 was a good year for hosts.

On The Job‘s Sgt. Joaquin Acosta (played by Joey Marquez) – The honest-to-goodness police officer who’ll try to take corruption down — despite the limitations of his clout and even if he had to do it on his own. PANALO ANG CAR-CHASE SCENE NIYA. DAPAT NINYONG MAPANOOD. Nagkaroon ako ng respeto kay Tsong bilang isang aktor.

Modern Family‘s Lily (played by Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) – She might look and sound monotonous but she delivers the best lines on Modern Family these days. A real scene stealer and a delight to watch.

The Year of Crossing Finish Lines

31 12 2012

When 2012 began, nothing was certain for me. I was out of a job, clueless of what’s next, and grasping for limited options. All I had was faith. And even that was running low. I was in a lot of doubts and was almost ready to give in to desperation. But thankfully, the year had other plans – deal-breaking, perspective-redefining, and ultimately, life-changing things – in store for me.

In February, I was interviewed for a job in GMA Network. In my exam and during my interviews, I was frequently asked: “Why do you want to become a promo writer?” My answer was always sure and simple: “For as long as I can recall, I have always been fond of television. That’s why the idea of becoming a part of the whole process most certainly makes me excited. Finally, something that is naturally me; not something that is an acquired taste, not something that I accept simply because there is no other choice; but something that snuggly fits.” I got in. It took me several jobs in seven years to get to this point. I dreamed. I believed. I survived the battle for the big break. 😉

gma

I am far from being the most physically fit person. But this year, I took interest in running.  In addition to indoor and outdoor trainings, I participated in three 10-kilometer runs (PR: 1 hour, 9 minutes), two 16-kilometer runs (PR: 1 hour, 57minutes), and last September, finished my very first half-marathon (3 hours, 19 minutes). Sadly, running had to take a back seat after my 21-K run. I intend to get back next year, though. I will.

runs

As a newbie, it was expected of me to partake in the presentation for the Christmas party. I was up for it since it’s been years since I last did this. And the whole thing was such a memorable experience. It was amazing to witness great minds and talented individuals (singers, dancers, musicians, artists, and practically everyone in the department) working hand-in-hand for a routine polished to perfection. It was a performance I am proud to be part of. Definitely an item ticked off my bucket list.

party

2012 taught me that no matter how distant and inconceivable your target might seem, after all those moments of doubts and desperation have passed, your heart’s relentless faith and passion will egg you on and everything will just come together. All you need to do is keep moving forward because every stride you make, be it small or significant, brings you closer to your goals. Other people will always have something to say, both encouraging and disapproving. Leave them be. They won’t matter in the end, anyway. Just keep your focus and look out for what gives you happiness. Only then will you realize that it isn’t necessarily greener on the other side all the time – especially if you’ve just crossed the finish line. You will simply be filled with contentment, love, and joy. “’Cause happy is what happens when all your dreams come true.”

That doesn’t mean the hard work stops, though. It actually signifies that you are ready to take on bigger things you can ever imagine.

Last year, maaga kong inangkin ang 2012. Hindi ako nabigo. Yun nga siguro ang susi. Kaya ang banat ko ngayon: MAS MATAYOG ANG LILIPARIN NGAYONG 2013!

Have a JOLLY 2013, everyone! 😀

The 2012 Jolly Awards

31 12 2012

Haha! :p

That being said, I am proud to present one of my yearend traditions.

When my Internet is down, I forget that the rest of my computer still works Award (Most-Liked Website)

Madalas din silang magkaroon ng promos (although I have yet to win a freebie).

Genius!

@nikowl – He is the author of the backtothefryingpan.wordpress.com. Taas ang mga kamay ko sa kasipagan niyang mag-update ng blog. And his entries are carefully and extensively researched, showing how well versed he is pagdating sa mga usapang pelikula at telebisyon.

Hindi lahat ng haters naiinggit sa iyo. Nakakairita ka lang talaga. Award (Most-Disliked Internet Personalities)

Zendee Rose – Let’s leave out the fact that she has the difficulty distinguishing shrieking from singing. Let’s pretend she’s truly sincere whenever she cries (or tries to) during her interviews (I will attest that at least one of those is fake.) Pero hindi ko mapapatawad ang guesting niya sa Wil Time Bigtime (sa TV 5) HABANG ipinalalabas sa Magpakailanman (sa GMA 7) ang kuwento ng buhay niya. That is just shameless.

Jamich – Hinding-hindi ko malilimutan ang tweet nila nung namatay si Dolphy. Just tasteless. And thoughtless.

Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know“You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness.” “But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough.” I love the angst and bitterness of this song. And the reality of how two people become strangers from being each other’s person. Sadly, though, I think Gotye is going to be a one-hit wonder.

Jason Mraz’s I Won’t Give Up“God knows we’re worth it. No, I won’t give up.” Heartfelt with just the right amount of sentiments.

Maroon 5’s Payphone“If ‘happy ever after’ did exist, I would still be holding you like this.” “You can’t expect me to be fine. I don’t expect you to care.” “Where are the plans we made for two?” Welcome back, Maroon 5!

fun.’s Some Nights“My heart is breaking for my sister, and the con that she call ‘love.’ But when I look into my nephew’s eyes, man, you wouldn’t believe the most amazing things that can come from some terrible nights (lies?).” “I called you up but we both agreed, it’s for the best you didn’t listen. It’s for the best we get our distance.” Brilliant lyrics. Masterfully crafted tune.

Ed Sheeran’s + : This young singer-songwriter has the gift to churn out melodic and radio-friendly tunes. Tracks to listen to: The A Team, Wake Me Up, Small Bump, Lego House

Sana magka-DVDrip na sa Torrent Award (Most-Liked Movies)

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower – I can blab for hours explaining why I love this movie, but in a nutshell it’s because it hits close to home. That scene in which everyone in the party raises their glass for Charlie and sort of welcomed him into their ‘group’ simply nailed it. It’s good to feel secure and know that in a way, you aren’t entirely alone. And that redefinition of a wallflower gives that sense of belonging. And oh, Emma Watson rocks! Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller were fantastic, as well.

Image

Hope Springs – What really does keep two people together? The movie provides a clear insight through Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones), a married couple in their 60s making an attempt to rekindle their old flame and get out of the monotony they are trapped in, with the help of relationship guru Dr. Feld (Steve Carell). It’s funny, it’s touching, it’s sensual, it’s realistic.

Ang ganda nito, manood ka Award (Most-Liked New TV Shows)

The Newsroom – It’s addicting, it’s exciting. Aaron Sorkin does a great job in seamlessly interspersing real-life events into the show’s episodes. Jeff Daniels (Will McAvoy), John Gallagher, Jr. (Jim Harper), Sam Waterston (Charlie Skinner), and Jane Fonda (Leona Lansing) are all great. And while some find Will’s speeches and time-to-time grandstanding grating, I find it amusing. I dig it. Whether he’s arguing with Charlie, Leona, and/or MacKenzie McHale, or crushing someone to pieces and putting them to shame, or screaming just because he can, I find myself siding with him every time. Episodes to watch: “We Just Decided To” (Episode 1), “I’ll Try To Fix You” (Episode 4), “Bullies” (Episode 6), “5/1” (Episode 7 or The Osama Bin Laden episode), “The Greater Fool” (Episode 10)

Veep – An excellent political comedy with a tremendous lead actress: Julia Louis-Dreyfus. My only grievance: only eight episodes for the first season. I want more Vice-President Selina Meyer! Episodes to watch: “Fundraiser” (Episode 1), “Chung” (Episode 4), “Baseball” (Episode 6), “Tears” (Episode 8)

Don’t Trust The Bitch In Apartment 23 – Twist after twist, surprise after surprise, laughter after laughter. Krysten Ritter (as Chloe, the bitch), Dream Walker (as June, the unsuspecting dreamer), and James Van Der Beek (as James, the man from the creek) are perfect for their roles. It doesn’t hurt that almost every episode, there’s a Dawson’s Creek reference. Episodes to watch: “Pilot” (Season 1, Episode 1), “Daddy’s Girl” (Season 1, Episode 2), “Parent Trap” (Season 1, Episode 3), “Love and Monsters” (Season 2, Episode 2), “Sexy People” (Season 2, Episode 3), “It’s A Miracle” (Season 2, Episode 4)

Hindi ka nanonood nito?! [Insert perplexed look here.]/Oo, nanonood pa rin ako nito Award (Most-Liked Returning TV Show):

Southland – For those who have not heard about this series, it’s a police drama that follows the lives of LA Police District officers. It stars Michael Cudlitz, Benjamin McKenzie, Shawn Hatosy, and Regina King. On its fourth season, Southland introduced the character of Jessica Tang (played by the very capable Lucy Liu). While her stint was limited, she was an effective addition to the cast. And given that the show’s ratings aren’t exactly on certain-renewal level, this year’s season finale could have served as a series ending. But thankfully, TNT decided to pick this up again.

(If I can) I’ll watch this over and over, for sure Award (Most-Liked TV/Movie Specials/Events)

ImageThe Desperate Housewives series finale – This was the very first American series I religiously followed. I loved its wicked type of comedy. For eight years, I watched Bree, Susan, Lynette, and Gaby: rooted for them, cried with them, and learned from them about family and friendship. And its final episode was the perfect homage to the whole journey of the characters (both alive and departed) and the show.

“As Susan left her driveway, she had a feeling she was being watched. And she was. The ghosts of people who had been a part of Wisteria Lane were gazing upon her as she passed. They watched her as they watch everyone, always hoping the living could learn to put aside rage and sorrow, bitterness and regret. These ghosts watch, wanting people to remember that even the most desperate life is oh, so wonderful.” –Mary Alice Young, Desperate Housewives (From  Season 8, Episode 23: “Finishing The Hat”)

Meryl Streep wins her third Oscar – Finally. And her speech was just awesome.

Himala Ngayon – It was nice to see how the arguably best Filipino film ever shown was made. In this documentary, there were lots of interesting tidbits and anecdotes from the actors and the production team, too.

Don’t Trust The Bitch In Apartment 23’s Chloe (played by Krysten Ritter) – A hardcore and scheming New Yorker with an extreme and bizarre way of showing that she, too, cares. Watch her on “Sexy People” (Season 2, Episode 3) to see the kind of friend she is.

Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe – In fairness, karamihan sa gumawa ng video nito, nakakatuwa naman. Just pure harmless fun. Here’s one with the ‘Kikay Barkada’ of Chico, Del, and Gino of The Morning Rush.

The Year of Flying on Faith

31 12 2011

Somehow I feel sad that 2011 is over. How can I not? This year was awesome and exciting for me. So seeing its inevitable end is a bit hard to grasp and take in. But truly, when you come right down to it, I can’t help but be very glad and appreciative. 2011 was such a wonder, which I will only look back with so much delight and gratitude.

Leaving your comfort zone is never easy. Taking risks is scary. It takes a lot of strength of character to actually go through with it. And even after you’ve done it, the temptation to doubt and backpedal is strong and pervasive. Trust me on that. To be completely honest, I still am scared of the uncertainty, of the pressure not to fail, of the thought that I would not be able to stand by the choice I made. But I am optimistic. I am open. I am a believer. Because 2011 reinforced my faith in faith.

Wishes do come true – even for the impatient, even for the lonely, even for the abandoned. Just when you’re ready to give up, something comes along that pulls you right out of the fear and skepticism you are wallowing in. Some things do take time, but they will come your way when you’re ready to receive them. I know, that probably will not make sense right away, and that’s fine. Because what rulebook says that you must understand everything all at once? Trying to do so is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

This year, I took a shot at flying and being free. While admittedly I am still in limbo, from my view up here, all I see in the horizon are possibilities without restrictions and opportunities for redemption. That is one breathtaking sight, if you ask me. I see my situation now as a chance to grow, be inspired again, and work even harder and happier. With all those at stake, this is a game you lose by choosing not to play. That, I believe, is a misstep no one should ever have to make. And for as long as I have people who are rooting for me, just waiting until I find my spot, I consider myself safe and blessed. Despite the free fall, I know I will land on my feet. 😉

Thank you very, very much, 2011. Next year is going to be tremendous. I just know it. Soar. Conquer. Thrive. Lezzdothis, lezzgo!

Have a JOLLY 2012, everyone! 😀

The 2011 Jolly Awards

30 12 2011

It was a hard-fought battle, but I prevailed over an extreme case of laziness and managed to come up with this list for the the third straight year. So yeah, I rock. Deal with it.

MOST-LIKED WEBSITE

Inday’s Tagalog Tracker – It’s where I get my Torrent downloads of Filipino films and TV shows. It also has OPM albums. Membership is required, though, and the admin and uploaders (WingTip!!!) are very particular with seeding.

MOST-LIKED TWITTER ACCOUNT

@superstarmarian – From dishing out witty and high-larious tweets about almost anything, she also spurs gimmicks from time to time for her followers to participate in (i.e.: #pansOfDYear, #Sayhi2Superstar, #namethatroad). She likewise loves tagging real accounts of celebrities, and some of them actually reply back. Of course there are those who take her way too seriously, but still, she handles them with such ease and humor.

Here are some of her tweets:

MOST-LIKED SONG

Someone Like You by Adele – Are you actually surprised? Watch her Brit Awards performance, it’s simply awesome. And gut-wrenching. This song is certainly one of my all-time favorites now. I’d say more, but that would be overkilling it. :p

(Runner-up: Arms by Christina Perri)

MOST-LIKED ALBUM

21 by Adele– Again, are you actually surprised? LOL. But really, the songs from her sophomore release reek of tremendous anguish and anger but still maintain control and composure. Watch Adele’s Royal Albert Hall concert, as well. Her spiels are candid and brutal. I love it.

(Runner-up: Torches by Foster The People)

MOST-LIKED MOVIES

Bridesmaids – Chick flick meets raunch comedy. Yes, it is possible. Some even call it the “female Hangover.” I guess that makes sense, but this film actually makes much more sense. It contains plenty of good laughs — some mushy, some goofy, and some queasy. Not to mention, the movie made Wilson Phillips relevant again. Haha. Kudos to Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy for a job well done.

The Ides Of March – Welcome to the dark side. Smart and gripping. Stern and honest. It blurs the line between principle and practicality and tells you that truth and triumph don’t always go together — at least in politics. The film also features fantastic ensemble work from Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, and Evan Rachel Wood.

MOST-LIKED MOVIE QUOTE

“Eat my shit.” –Minny Jackson, The Help

MOST-LIKED TV SHOW (NEW)

Revenge – Seriously, getting to this decision was a huge imposition. 2011 was a really, really good year for television. I picked this deliciously wicked drama series because it is terribly addicting and perfectly paced. Reality and sensibility out the window, but every Emily Thorne-Victoria Grayson showdown is such a delight to watch.

(A rather long list of runners-up: 2 Broke Girls, Awkward, Boss, Episodes, Happy Endings, Homeland, New Girl, Suburgatory, and The Voice)

MOST-LIKED TV SHOWS (RETURNING)

Community – Watch the episodes “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons,” “Paradigms Of Human Memory,” “A Fistful Of Paintballs,” “For A Few Paintballs More,” “Remedial Chaos Theory,” and “Studies In Modern Movement.”

Modern Family – Watch the episodes “Caught In The Act,” “Mother’s Day,” “See You Next Fall,” “When Good Kids Go Bad,” “Phil On Wire,” and “Punkin Chunkin.”

MOST-LIKED TV SHOW CHARACTER

Dean Craig Pelton from Community – The quirky, lovable, extremely high-spirited but well-meaning dean of Greendale Community College. You gotta love his numerous costume changes. Jim Rash is such a talented actor.

(Runner-up: Jess from New Girl. Because she is Zooey Deschanel. Period.)

MOST-LIKED TV EVENT

Michael Scott’s departure from Dunder Mifflin Sabre and Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was inevitable. Steve Carell had to move on at some point (movies over TV), and so did his character on The Office (family over career). For obvious reasons, the whole thing wasn’t exactly a happy TV event. Rainn Wilson said it best: “It was then end of an era.” But his last few episodes were greatly executed. For me, Michael Scott will always be the WORLD’S BEST BOSS. 😉

(Runners-up: The Modern Family domination at the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards aka the Modern Family Awards and Ricky Gervais hosting the 2011 Golden Globe Awards.)

MOST-LIKED TV SHOW QUOTES

“There’s a reason I said I’d be happy alone. It wasn’t ’cause I thought I’d be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone, and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It’s easier to be alone because what if you learn that you need love, and then you don’t have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It’s like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.” –Meredith Grey, Grey’s Anatomy (“Unaccompanied Minor”)

“Don’t believe everything you’ve heard about me. The truth is much worse.” –Megan Hunt, Body Of Proof (“Pilot”)

“There are dreamers, and there are realists in this world. You’d think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realist would find the realist, but more often than not, the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists? Well, without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground.” –Cameron Tucker, Modern Family (“Punkin Chunkin”)

MOST-LIKED VIRAL VIDEO

Friday by Rebecca Black – It’s so bad, it’s so funny. With her thought-provoking lyrics, her hatred for auto-tuning, and the extremely cool kids in the background who love “partying, partying, yeah,” how can we not get so excited? (“We so excited!”) Hahahaha!

(Runners-up: Super Bass by Sophia Grace Brownlee. And her guesting on Ellen. And her red carpet stint at the AMAs.)

MOST-LIKED GUILTY PLEASURE

Eat Bulaga‘s Sugod Bahay Gang!

Some of their unforgettable episodes:

1) Videoke

2) Raid

3) Celso vs Gaspar

4) Jose as Willie Revillame

5) Lunch with Bossing

6) Bossing cries

And the best Pinoy Henyo episode — EVER!

MOST-LIKED ADIK PERSON

Ramona Revilla/BautistaKapag ba nawawala, si Elisa na agad? Hindi ba puwedeng si Ramona muna? Bwahahahahahaha! 😀 Too bad, her video had been taken down from YouTube. Her re-enactments were Oscar-worthy. But my favorite statements from her were: “Si Janelle po katabi ng pinto, dapat siya ang mag-lock. Di ko trabahong i-lock yung pinto.” and “Ano’ng gagawin ko, Janelle, ano’ng gagawin ko?! Di ko alam gagawin ko, may PLDT ba dito?! Kasi di ko alam number ng rescue na tatawagan ko, Janelle, Janelle!” I know a serious crime had been committed, but her story, her video, and her jaws had me laughing through the roof.

(Runner-up: the valium-popping Mrs. Erlinda Ligot)

LEAST-LIKED NEWS

Pedring and Sendong devastations – I couldn’t even begin to describe how I feel about this topic. 😦

MOST-LIKED PERSON(S)

Philippine Dragon Boat Team members – No matter how other institutions or people belittle your achievements, you’ve made the country proud. Kudos!

LEAST-LIKED PERSON(S)

All the morons that started and spread the “Let’s support ‘real’ Filipino athletes” crap (AKA Philippine Dragon Boat Team vs. the Philippine Azkals) – It reeks of hypocrisy, absurdity, and insecurity. And posting this illogical thought says more about your limited understanding than it does about the ‘fake’ Filipinos (halfsies) you’ve been profusely resenting.

Noynoy Aquino – Childish and seems to be always missing-in-action. While I’m proud to say that I did not vote for him, sadly, I can’t simply stand from a distance and do my told-you-so song and dance.

(Runners-up: CBCP members. You have several too many issues. No to Angry Birds gifts, really?)

MOST-LIKED REXY JOLLY PHOTO

Parasailing in Boracay. It is the perfect depiction of what I had done this year: leaving my comfort zone to fly and be free. 🙂

See y’all next year. 😉

The Joy Of Seeing Joy

25 12 2011

Smile. Even just for the day, smile.

I understand this might be a tall task for many people given the adversities we are faced with on a daily basis. Personally, it breaks my heart whenever I see images of the appalling devastation that recently occurred in the southern part of the country. Losing lives in more ways than one isn’t just downright sad. It is unbearable. And in the wake of this immense tragedy, it is so common for people to tell that “everything happens for a reason” and that “life must go on” just to provide some sort of comfort and relief, all the while knowing that it will never be enough and that nothing is guaranteed. However, on this day, I’d like to be an optimist who acknowledges that when you reach rock bottom, there is no other way but up. I’d like to pick positivity over reality for a change, at least for today.

Filipinos are resilient. That is not being conceited. That is just truth, plain and simple. And I’d like to think, that still holds true. For now, let us play pretend and believe in miracles and magic. Let us allow ourselves to cross our fingers and pray for the best. Let us wish for a little more courage for us to recover faster and survive worse. No matter how difficult it might seem, try to find a source of faith and wonder because seeing joy is contagious, that’s the beauty of it. I don’t know. It might help us out. Maybe. Hopefully.

Smile. Share a piece of happiness. See a flicker of hope.

Have a meaningful Christmas, everyone. 🙂

The Boracay Bliss

30 04 2011

I get up and head out at around eight in the morning. With my aviators on and my ever trusty belt/sling bag that lodges my digital camera, wallet, cellphones, and room key, wrapped around my body, I take a stroll from Station 1 to 3 and back, subtly gawking at all things and people, trying to decipher and discover their stories and possibilities. From my morning beach walk, I return to my hotel room where a fully made bed awaits me. I rest for a bit, freshen up, and then take my lunch. After a heavy and hearty meal, I go back to my chamber again to get my sun tan and cooled bottled water. Once more, I hit the beach to find myself an idyllic spot where I can bask in all the sun’s mighty glory as my back is satisfyingly pressed against the fine, pristine white sand. And from time to time, I dip myself into the crystal clear beach water that leaves a salty yet strangely sweet aftertaste in my mouth, which I don’t seem to mind at all.

That was my life in Boracay. Man, that is the life.

In case you were wondering, yes, I went there alone. I was able to pull it off, and did so with such flying (and varying) colors. Many people question why I do it (traveling by myself) and give me that searching-bordering-on-condescending, hoity-toity look. Some even consider it weird that anybody does it. I actually have two answers; one sounds rude and cocky, while the other is more on the pensive, character-defining side: (1) because I am secure enough and I can afford to do it, and (2) because I value my me-time. I sincerely love doing things alone. I just do. It helps me de-clutter my mind and shoo all the stresses away. In addition to that, like what I said before, going solo dismisses all conflicts and considerations you need to be mindful of when traveling with other people. It’s all about you and what you prefer. You get to enjoy and experience things your own way. And that’s how it was for me in my recent, out-of-the-norm trip.

Without a doubt, I was over the moon for this vacation. I had almost everything taken care of from a couple of months back. But as the getaway drew nearer, the eagerness simply went through the roof. I didn’t sleep the night before my departure. Not that I couldn’t, but I was afraid I’d miss my 8:10am-flight. I took the cab from my house to the airport. I ate breakfast there, which was a very pricey thing to do. I spent P122 for fried rice, egg, and mineral water, and was so not worth it. So yeah, never again. It was my first time in the Manila Domestic Airport (which, by the way, to my surprise, had very nice and clean restrooms), it was my first time to fly alone and Seair. I checked in my luggage and waited for boarding. It took our plane, a 32-seater, a little while before it could take off. Our flight got delayed for a few minutes, and yet, still arrived in Caticlan right on time. Yay! Generally, it was smooth-flowing.

There was nothing much to see at the Caticlan Airport. In fact, if not for the runway, I would think it was an abandoned factory or something. As soon as I got my suitcase, I hailed a tricycle and headed to Jetty Port. After about 15 minutes, I arrived at Cagban Port where Ms. Jean, my contact who booked my accommodation, was waiting for me. Another tricycle ride and in no time, I was at the Royal Park Hotel. Thankfully, the room was readily available, so I was able to check in early.

I only had three goals for this retreat: (1) get sun-smacked; (2) parasail; and (3) ride the zorb. Other than these, I had no other plans, except maybe to really enjoy.  Sunbathing perhaps is one of the last things I will ever give up on. Soaking in all the sunshine is always cathartic and cozy. Ditch the beach beds! Feeling the sand and the water is the real shiz. Not to mention the specific seaside scent and the sound of the crashing waves, they’re quite simply soothing. Parasailing was such an incredibly remarkable experience. I’d even go out on a limb and say that it was some of the best 15 minutes of my life. Being up there felt like stepping into an oasis of tranquility. The comforting fusion of the cool wind and the warm dash of sunbeam tenderly cloaked my spirit and dissolved all my anxieties, and even for that fleeting moment, the world stopped and shut down. It was superb. The mere thought of doing it again gives me good chills. I didn’t get to try the zorb. Boo. Apparently, doing it NOT alone is more fun; hence, I was advised against it. I was, instead, encouraged to give reef walking a shot. Comparing the two, doing the zorb costs a little less (P580) than helmet diving (P600), but the latter lasts longer (ten to 15 minutes) than the former (three to five minutes). Oh, and souvenir pictures and video are included in the reef walking package. That was my cue. While I did enjoy helmet diving, I’m not sure I’m elated to do it again. Sinking was a struggle. It hurt my ears. There was just too much pressure. And also, it was really cold underwater. But upon seeing the fishes in various shades and shapes rush toward me, I was one happy kid. Of course, the photo opportunity was pure wonder.

A wall art at a restaurant could not have stated it any better: “Diet is not an option.” And that was exactly what I adhered to. I binged. Most of them were utterly mouthwatering and scrumptious — from the generic fares like tapsilog, isaw, fries, and beer, to the specific ones such as Bite Club’s grilled burger, I ❤ Backyard BBQ’s bulalo steak, Smoke’s beef salpicao, The Original Hawaiian Bar-B-Que’s sun-ripened mango chicken BBQ, Fishbar’s beer-battered fish and chips, Crazy Crepe’s mango crepe with cookies and cream, and Jonah’s mango and banana choco vanilla shakes. This summer holiday was one crazy-ass celebration for calories, my adipose tissues, and if I still had them, my gallstones. Sinful indulgence indeed! I also feasted my eyes on the diverse, mostly lovely, and occasionally hilarious sights of Boracay: the sunset, the sand arts, the beach sports and activities, and the “success stories”/”island souvenirs.”

It goes without saying that this vacation caused a pretty substantial dent on my wallet. Doing activities individually does cost much more. You can’t really haggle and you have to shoulder the regular rate. But I prepared myself for all the expenses. And in the scheme of things, seeing how my heart ended up with immeasurable joy and appreciation, money shouldn’t be an issue. I swear, had I chanced upon my worst enemy there, I would have shown compassion and would have given my forgiveness in a heartbeat.

My four-day bliss inevitably and unfortunately had to end. The last day just passed by so swift: I got up, packed my stuff, took one last stroll along the beach, had breakfast, checked out from the hotel, took a tricycle, a boat, and another tricyle, and there I was at Caticlan Airport, waiting to board. I wanted to prolong my stay there, but Seair refused to give me an extension, as my flight back to Manila was right on the dot. With a heavy heart, I mustered all the fondness and jollity and life went on. All things considered, though, every second of this trip was a moment well spent, so definitely, there’s no speck of regret for me. And most certainly, this is an indelible highlight in the Rexy Jolly chronicles.

Thank you, Boracay. As usual and as expected, you delivered. You were all sorts of awesome. I’ll see you again — hopefully very soon. 🙂

Now here’s a pressing concern: I’ve already picked Baguio and Boracay as my personal hideaways. Where to go next? Time to cruise a place that begins with another letter in the alphabet, maybe? That’s a start. 😉
