The 5th Annual Jolly Awards

31 12 2013

I’m proud and happy to be doing this for the fifth straight year. Here we go.

When my Internet is down, I forget that the rest of my computer still works Award (Most-Liked Website)

Haha.

I will follow you Award (Most-Liked Internet Personality)

I’m looking at you, ALE fans). Team Hair Clips, Team Blush On, Team Water Jug, bentang-benta!

Jamich – Strike two na sa akin ‘tong dalawang [insert expletives here] ‘to, eh. Last year, umepal sila nang mamatay si Dolphy. Ngayong taon, pinakinabangan pa nila ang nangyaring pananalasa ng bagyong Yolanda para sumikat. Thoughtless. Tasteless.

Try nating ipag-trend Award (Most-Liked Hashtag)

#ilovemyjob – I do. Pramis. 🙂

#ALLCAPSPARAINTENSE – Mas may impact, eh.

#oinkoink – #alamna Haha!

#pagmaytime – Natutuwa talaga ako sa expression na ito. It’s a reminder, I think, that sometimes you have to exert a little more effort para magawa ang isang bagay. Seryoso. Hahaha!

I-share na yan Award (Most-Liked Memes/Random Images)

Homage to the artistry of Meryl Streep and the comedic genius of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Really funny and works on so many levels.

Nancy, Nancy, Nancy. You still have not answered this. What exactly are you doing there?

Dumudugo na ang tenga ko pero hindi ko matigilang pakinggan Award (Most-Liked Songs)

Pink (feat. Nate Ruess)’s Just Give Me A Reason – “We’re not broken, just bent. And we can learn to love again.” True. Two dynamite vocalists collaborating. Just wow.

KZ Tandingan’s Scared To Death – “I’m scared to death
. Falling in love with you
, I’m scared to death.
There’s nothing that I can’t do.
I’m scared to death.
What if you won’t be around anymore?” It’s that leap you are so afraid to take because of the uncertainty. Scary shit, indeed. And KZ Tandingan’s voice is just so haunting.

Zedd (feat. Foxes)’s Clarity – “If our love’s insanity, why are you my clarity?” “If you pull then I’ll push too deep and I’ll fall right back to you.” Just imagine. You’ll understand.

Sa kabila ng short attention span ko, nagawa kong pakinggan ang buong album Award (Most-Liked Albums)

Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs 2013 – This is actually a great selection of songs. 2013 was an excellent year for songwriting competitions. And I’m glad that mainstream OPM is making good noise again. Tracks to listen to: Anong Nangyari Sa Ating Dalawa, If You Ever Change Your Mind, Kahit Na, and Scared To Death

Lorde’s Pure Heroine – It’s fresh, it’s cozy, and it’s addictive. And she’s only 17. What the fuck was I doing when I was her age? Definitely not whipping out such an amazing CD. Tracks to listen to: 400 Lux, Royals, Team, and A World Alone

Sana magka-DVDrip na sa Torrent Award (Most-Liked Movies)

On The Job – According to myself: “On The Job is as good as advertised. Gritty, gripping! Lakas makakabog ng dibdib. Astig si Joel Torre, pero MVP ko si Joey Marquez! Wuhooow!” Totoo yan. At paninindigan ko yan hanggang sa huling hininga ko. Wow. :))

Gravity – Sabi ko matapos ko itong mapanood: “Sa wakas, I got to see Gravity. How can a thriller like this have so much heart? Ang galing! And career-best performance from Sandra Bullock, hands down.” Totoo pa rin yan. Not sure about its Oscar chances yet, pero may laban naman ang pelikulang ito.

May bagong pupuno ng external hard drive ko Award (Most-Liked New TV Shows)

The Following – Otherwise known as “The Cardiac Arrest,” it follows the life of former FBI agent Ryan Hardy (played by Kevin Bacon) and his attempts to recapture his nemesis — serial killer Joe Caroll (incredibly portrayed by James Purefoy). You’ve gotta love the surprising twists, the complex characters (most especially Carroll’s killer minions, headed by Emma/Denise), and the Edgar Allan Poe references. Episodes to watch: “Pilot” (Episode 1), “Chapter 2” (Episode 2), “The Siege” (Episode 5), “The Fall” (Episode 6), “Welcome Home (Episode 8), and “The End Is Near” (Episode 14).

The Goldbergs – It’s a huge throwback to the ’80s! A simple series about a  family depicted through the video recordings shot and collected by the youngest Goldberg, Adam (who happens to be the creator of the show). It never ceases to tug the right strings to tickle the heart. Episodes to watch: “The Circle Of Driving” (Episode 1), “Daddy Daughter Day” (Episode 2), “Mini Murray” (Episode 3), and “Call Me When You Get There” (Episode 7).

The Crazy Ones – The new CBS comedy about the dynamic world of advertising, features a talented  and likable ensemble lead by Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and James Wolk. It’s a David E. Kelley show, so expect those hints of pain covered beneath heartfelt speeches and declarations, popular guest stars, and a wonderful selection of music.  Episodes to watch: “Pilot” (Episode 1), “The Spectacular” (Episode 2), “Hugging The Now” (Episode 6), and “Sidney, Australia” (Episode 7).

Hindi ka nanonood nito?! [Insert perplexed look here.]/Oo, nanonood pa rin ako nito./Season ___ na, pero humabol ka! Award (Most-Liked Returning TV Shows):

Veep – US Vice-President Selina Meyer and her crazy staff are back! For the second season, the show delves deeper into the veep’s personal life and we get to know more about the people working with her. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a comedy genius and she is surrounded by equally stellar supporting cast members. Episodes to watch: “Midterms” (Season 2 Episode 1), “Signals” (Season 2 Episode 2), “Running” (Season 2 Episode 9), and “DC” (Season 2 Episode 10)

The Good Wife – Now on its fifth year, this legal drama becomes a must-watch for me again. Just like Julianna Margulies’s Alicia Florrick, the show is kicking ass this season. Kudos also goes to the guest stars who make the show even more interesting to follow: Melissa George, Ben Rappaport, and Jason O’Mara. Episodes to watch: “Everything Is Ending” (Season 5 Episode 1), “Outside The Bubble” (Season 5 Episode 4), “Hitting The Fan” (Season 5 Episode 5), and “The Decision Tree” (Season 5 Episode 10)

I’ll watch this over and over for sure Award (Most-Liked TV/Movie Specials/Events)

The Office series finale – While I still believe the show should have ended when Michael Scott (Steve Carell) left, seeing this hilarious mockumentary wrap it all up was still rather sad. Because as Michael puts it: “Goodbyes are a bitch.” And I will definitely miss these lovable looneys: Jim, Pam, Dwight, Angela, Stanley, Phyllis, Kevin, Meredith, Oscar, Erin, Ryan, Kelly, Creed, Darryl, Toby, Andy. And thank you for the nine wonderful years of employment, Dunder Mifflin, Inc.

“I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good ol’ days before you’ve actually left them.” –Andy Bernard, The Office

the office

Other series finales: 30 RockDexter, The Big C, and Breaking Bad – Wow. I just realized I had to say goodbye to a lot of TV shows and characters this year.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Golden Globes, Seth MacFarlane hosting the Oscars, and Neil Patrick Harris hosting the Tonys – They all nailed it. Thanks to them, three-hour award shows became a lot less tiresome. 2013 was a good year for hosts.

I-status/tweet na yan Award (Most-Liked TV/Movie Quotes)

“Just like our life; we appear and we disappear. And we are so important to some, but we are just passing through.” –Natalia, Before Midnight

“Still there. Still there. Still there. Gone.” –Celine, Before Midnight

“Taguan tayo! Taguan ng feelings!” –John Rae, It Takes A Man And A Woman

“Why is love so punishing?” –Joe Carroll, The Following

“Maybe the hardest prisons to break out of are the ones without locks.” –Abed, Community

“Screw waiting! I wanna be chosen.” –Emily Owens, Emily Owens, MD

Eksenador/a Award (Most-Liked TV/Movie Characters)

On The Job‘s Sgt. Joaquin Acosta (played by Joey Marquez) – The honest-to-goodness police officer who’ll try to take corruption down — despite the limitations of his clout and even if he had to do it on his own. PANALO ANG CAR-CHASE SCENE NIYA. DAPAT NINYONG MAPANOOD. Nagkaroon ako ng respeto kay Tsong bilang isang aktor.

Modern Family‘s Lily (played by Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) – She might look and sound monotonous but she delivers the best lines on Modern Family these days. A real scene stealer and a delight to watch.

Walang basagan ng trip Award (Most-Liked Guilty Pleasures)

All these catchy TV commercials and jingles:

Pantene – “International moveeeeeeeeeeh!!!” by Erich Gonzales (Ano ba talaga itong international movie na ito??? Pakisagot na, please!!!)

Palmolive Naturals – “To the left, to the right, umikot nang sabay-sabay. Bye-bye, suklay. Do the Palmolive finger comb. To the left, to the right, umikot nang sabay-sabay. Bye-bye, suklay, with Palmolive Naturals.”

Surf – “Pinalaki nang pinalaki… Pinakamalaki!”

They could be quite annoying, but you have to admit, they ‘re effective. Hahaha! Lakas maka-LSS, diba?

Sakit  sa ulo pero ang sarap pagtawanan Award (Most-Liked Adik Personalities)

Willie Revillame – “You don’t do that to me!” Ayan, napa-retire ka tuloy nang wala sa oras, ‘no? Not that I’m complaining. :p Watch the meltdown here.

Claudine Barretto“Kuya Randy (Santiago), stop bullying me!” Ano na, Klaw-Klaw? Back-to-back ka na sa category na ito. Anong saga na naman ang papasukin mo next year?

Anne Curtis“I can buy you, your friends, and this club!”

Will all due respect po, PAKYU.

The 2011 Jolly Awards

30 12 2011

It was a hard-fought battle, but I prevailed over an extreme case of laziness and managed to come up with this list for the the third straight year. So yeah, I rock. Deal with it.

MOST-LIKED WEBSITE

Inday’s Tagalog Tracker – It’s where I get my Torrent downloads of Filipino films and TV shows. It also has OPM albums. Membership is required, though, and the admin and uploaders (WingTip!!!) are very particular with seeding.

MOST-LIKED TWITTER ACCOUNT

@superstarmarian – From dishing out witty and high-larious tweets about almost anything, she also spurs gimmicks from time to time for her followers to participate in (i.e.: #pansOfDYear, #Sayhi2Superstar, #namethatroad). She likewise loves tagging real accounts of celebrities, and some of them actually reply back. Of course there are those who take her way too seriously, but still, she handles them with such ease and humor.

Here are some of her tweets:

MOST-LIKED SONG

Someone Like You by Adele – Are you actually surprised? Watch her Brit Awards performance, it’s simply awesome. And gut-wrenching. This song is certainly one of my all-time favorites now. I’d say more, but that would be overkilling it. :p

(Runner-up: Arms by Christina Perri)

MOST-LIKED ALBUM

21 by Adele– Again, are you actually surprised? LOL. But really, the songs from her sophomore release reek of tremendous anguish and anger but still maintain control and composure. Watch Adele’s Royal Albert Hall concert, as well. Her spiels are candid and brutal. I love it.

(Runner-up: Torches by Foster The People)

MOST-LIKED MOVIES

Bridesmaids – Chick flick meets raunch comedy. Yes, it is possible. Some even call it the “female Hangover.” I guess that makes sense, but this film actually makes much more sense. It contains plenty of good laughs — some mushy, some goofy, and some queasy. Not to mention, the movie made Wilson Phillips relevant again. Haha. Kudos to Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy for a job well done.

The Ides Of March – Welcome to the dark side. Smart and gripping. Stern and honest. It blurs the line between principle and practicality and tells you that truth and triumph don’t always go together — at least in politics. The film also features fantastic ensemble work from Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, and Evan Rachel Wood.

MOST-LIKED MOVIE QUOTE

“Eat my shit.” –Minny Jackson, The Help

MOST-LIKED TV SHOW (NEW)

Revenge – Seriously, getting to this decision was a huge imposition. 2011 was a really, really good year for television. I picked this deliciously wicked drama series because it is terribly addicting and perfectly paced. Reality and sensibility out the window, but every Emily Thorne-Victoria Grayson showdown is such a delight to watch.

(A rather long list of runners-up: 2 Broke Girls, Awkward, Boss, Episodes, Happy Endings, Homeland, New Girl, Suburgatory, and The Voice)

MOST-LIKED TV SHOWS (RETURNING)

Community – Watch the episodes “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons,” “Paradigms Of Human Memory,” “A Fistful Of Paintballs,” “For A Few Paintballs More,” “Remedial Chaos Theory,” and “Studies In Modern Movement.”

Modern Family – Watch the episodes “Caught In The Act,” “Mother’s Day,” “See You Next Fall,” “When Good Kids Go Bad,” “Phil On Wire,” and “Punkin Chunkin.”

MOST-LIKED TV SHOW CHARACTER

Dean Craig Pelton from Community – The quirky, lovable, extremely high-spirited but well-meaning dean of Greendale Community College. You gotta love his numerous costume changes. Jim Rash is such a talented actor.

(Runner-up: Jess from New Girl. Because she is Zooey Deschanel. Period.)

MOST-LIKED TV EVENT

Michael Scott’s departure from Dunder Mifflin Sabre and Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was inevitable. Steve Carell had to move on at some point (movies over TV), and so did his character on The Office (family over career). For obvious reasons, the whole thing wasn’t exactly a happy TV event. Rainn Wilson said it best: “It was then end of an era.” But his last few episodes were greatly executed. For me, Michael Scott will always be the WORLD’S BEST BOSS. 😉

(Runners-up: The Modern Family domination at the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards aka the Modern Family Awards and Ricky Gervais hosting the 2011 Golden Globe Awards.)

MOST-LIKED TV SHOW QUOTES

“There’s a reason I said I’d be happy alone. It wasn’t ’cause I thought I’d be happy alone. It was because I thought if I loved someone, and then it fell apart, I might not make it. It’s easier to be alone because what if you learn that you need love, and then you don’t have it? What if you like it and lean on it? What if you shape your life around it and then it falls apart? Can you even survive that kind of pain? Losing love is like organ damage. It’s like dying. The only difference is death ends. This? It could go on forever.” –Meredith Grey, Grey’s Anatomy (“Unaccompanied Minor”)

“Don’t believe everything you’ve heard about me. The truth is much worse.” –Megan Hunt, Body Of Proof (“Pilot”)

“There are dreamers, and there are realists in this world. You’d think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realist would find the realist, but more often than not, the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists? Well, without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground.” –Cameron Tucker, Modern Family (“Punkin Chunkin”)

MOST-LIKED VIRAL VIDEO

Friday by Rebecca Black – It’s so bad, it’s so funny. With her thought-provoking lyrics, her hatred for auto-tuning, and the extremely cool kids in the background who love “partying, partying, yeah,” how can we not get so excited? (“We so excited!”) Hahahaha!

(Runners-up: Super Bass by Sophia Grace Brownlee. And her guesting on Ellen. And her red carpet stint at the AMAs.)

MOST-LIKED GUILTY PLEASURE

Eat Bulaga‘s Sugod Bahay Gang!

Some of their unforgettable episodes:

1) Videoke

2) Raid

3) Celso vs Gaspar

4) Jose as Willie Revillame

5) Lunch with Bossing

6) Bossing cries

And the best Pinoy Henyo episode — EVER!

MOST-LIKED ADIK PERSON

Ramona Revilla/BautistaKapag ba nawawala, si Elisa na agad? Hindi ba puwedeng si Ramona muna? Bwahahahahahaha! 😀 Too bad, her video had been taken down from YouTube. Her re-enactments were Oscar-worthy. But my favorite statements from her were: “Si Janelle po katabi ng pinto, dapat siya ang mag-lock. Di ko trabahong i-lock yung pinto.” and “Ano’ng gagawin ko, Janelle, ano’ng gagawin ko?! Di ko alam gagawin ko, may PLDT ba dito?! Kasi di ko alam number ng rescue na tatawagan ko, Janelle, Janelle!” I know a serious crime had been committed, but her story, her video, and her jaws had me laughing through the roof.

(Runner-up: the valium-popping Mrs. Erlinda Ligot)

LEAST-LIKED NEWS

Pedring and Sendong devastations – I couldn’t even begin to describe how I feel about this topic. 😦

MOST-LIKED PERSON(S)

Philippine Dragon Boat Team members – No matter how other institutions or people belittle your achievements, you’ve made the country proud. Kudos!

LEAST-LIKED PERSON(S)

All the morons that started and spread the “Let’s support ‘real’ Filipino athletes” crap (AKA Philippine Dragon Boat Team vs. the Philippine Azkals) – It reeks of hypocrisy, absurdity, and insecurity. And posting this illogical thought says more about your limited understanding than it does about the ‘fake’ Filipinos (halfsies) you’ve been profusely resenting.

Noynoy Aquino – Childish and seems to be always missing-in-action. While I’m proud to say that I did not vote for him, sadly, I can’t simply stand from a distance and do my told-you-so song and dance.

(Runners-up: CBCP members. You have several too many issues. No to Angry Birds gifts, really?)

MOST-LIKED REXY JOLLY PHOTO

Parasailing in Boracay. It is the perfect depiction of what I had done this year: leaving my comfort zone to fly and be free. 🙂

The 2010 Jolly Awards

30 12 2010

So, here it is. The second serving of my most- and least-liked yearend list, which I began in 2009. While this was one draining writing assignment, doing this was absolutely fun. I had the best time reminiscing how 2010 went by.

MOST-LIKED WEBSITE
The Envelope – You think you know all about the Oscars? Or the Emmys? Or the Grammys? You better think again. I bet you haven’t met the moderators and posters from this forum. Everything you need to learn about award-giving bodies is right here. Get familiarized with the nomination and voting process, trends, traditions, and controversies. The message boards really get exciting (and exhausting) as the awards season approaches (which, by the way, is just around the corner).

MOST-LIKED SONGS
Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars
Fuck You by Cee Lo Green
King Of Anything by Sara Bareilles
Waiter by Eevee

MOST-LIKED MOVIES
The Social Network – I loved its crisp and exciting storytelling. Unexpectedly great ensemble, too.
Toy Story 3
– The story of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the whole gang came to a full circle. An epic tale that took 15 years to complete, and yet never lost its heart and magic.

MOST-LIKED MOVIE QUOTE
“I just don’t want this thing you’re going through to define your life. Do what you gotta do. Let your freak flag fly. Just make sure you have an exit strategy.” –Mrs. Griffith, Easy A

MOST-LIKED TV SHOW (NEW)
Raising Hope – Members of a quirky family try to pull themselves together and make it all work as they raise the adorable baby named Hope. Good writing, good cast.

MOST-LIKED TV SHOW (RETURNING)
Modern Family – The second season’s been a bit less stellar compared to the first, but still an amazing sitcom, nonetheless.

MOST-LIKED TV CHARACTER
Manny Delgado of Modern Family– With lines like “Stupid is not following your heart and taking a chance on love.” and “The universe is cold and loveless,” how can you not like this kid? LOL.

MOST-LIKED TV EVENTS
Lost series finale – Hands down. Best. TV show. Ever.
Showtime Season 1 Grand Finals – Just pure entertainment bliss.
Modern Family winning Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmys – I was seriously rooting for the show, and would’ve been distraught had it lost (to Glee).

MOST-LIKED TV QUOTES
“They call me weird. I was weird. Fun weird. This is the funny thing about growing up: for years and years, everybody’s desperately afraid to be different, in any way. And then suddenly, almost overnight, everybody wants to be different. And that is where we win.” –Mitchell Pritchett, Modern Family
“You can do anything you want in life… Unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too.” – Conan O’Brien, The Tonight Show
“Complicated relationships are a breeding ground for misinterpreted actions.” –Kalinda Sharma, The Good Wife

MOST-LIKED VIRAL VIDEOS

These individuals raised fanaticism to a whole new level. Go, Alec! Wooot! Hahaha!

By far, the most enjoyable Lady GaGa song cover I have seen.

MOST-LIKED GUILTY PLEASURE
Face To Face“Pagbibintangan mo akong nagnakaw ng tortang talong samantalang ang ulam ko’y menudo?” says the guest to her neighbor who accused her of stealing their viand. Campy scenes, snarky banters, domestic squabbles. Gotta love ’em all.

MOST-LIKED ADIK
Shalani Soledad – Well, she’s not crazy per se (unless you consider agreeing to work with Willie Revillame an act of insanity), but seeing how she lifelessly hosts a primetime variety program makes me laugh my ass off.

LEAST-LIKED NEWS
Quirino Grandstand standoff – The hostage drama was such a disturbing incident for the victims and their families, but it was more alarming to realize that our police department isn’t equipped with the know-how to deal with this kind of situation.
Joseph Estrada garnering almost 9.5 million votes in the 2010 Presidential Elections – What. The. Fuck.

LEAST-LIKED TREND
Glee fantardism – I must admit, I was a huge fan of the show when it started. But after its 13th episode, it became a victim of its own success and a parody of itself. And many, if not most, of these hardcore Gleeks are infinitely annoying. They feel like everything in the world originated from Glee. Puhleeease. *rolleyes*

MOST-LIKED PERSON(S)
Filipino athletes – Special shoutout to Asian Games gold medalists Rey Saludar (boxing), Dennis Orcollo (billiards), and Biboy Rivera (bowling). They have little support and they lack financial aids, and yet they pour their hearts out to give honor to the country.

LEAST-LIKED PERSON(S)
All stupid, insensitive, gigantic pricks who thought that the site of the standoff was an ideal place for photo ops.

LEAST-LIKED INSTITUTION
Catholic Church – Excommunicate me. I support the RH Bill. ‘Nuff said.

The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards were a blast. Not only because of the results, but also because of the gimmicks and hooplas that worked pretty great. It was certainly a fun and entertaining way to spend a holiday at home. 😉

The WOW.

– The Glee-inspired opening featuring Jimmy Fallon; Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, and Jane Lynch of Glee; Kate Gosselin of Kate Plus 8; Jon Hamm of Mad Men; Betty White of Hot In Cleveland; Jorge Garcia of Lost; Nina Dobrev of The Vampire Diaries; Joel McHale of Community; and Randy Jackson of American Idol. Fun, fun fun!!!

– Eric Stonestreet wins Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series! Oh yeah! And that sweet, heartfelt acceptance speech. Way to go, Fizbo! 😀

– Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan win Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series! Watch their bit in the presentation of the nominees, and you’ll see they’re a genius. Well deserved. And Levitan, aside from being Ray Romano’s spitting image, gives one entertaining acceptance speech.

– Jane Lynch! Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory! Edie Falco of Nurse Jackie! Glee for Directing! Personal wish list keeps up.

– Always the scene-stealer, always the funny man Ricky Gervais! “Mel Gibson, he’s been through a lot… But not as much as the Jews.” Beer, anyone? HAHAHAHAHA!

– Kyra Sedgwick. Finally. (Future hopefuls, take note: Emmy voters do watch your entries. Screwing your submissions is never a good idea. Get that, Steve Carell, Sofia Vergara, and Ty Burrell?)

– Jimmy Fallon’s terrific hosting job! Funny banters and musical segments, especially the one in which he sings to The Pacific producer Tom Hanks: “You’re running out of wars.” LOL! He does a great, hilarious number honoring 24, Law & Order, and Lost, too. Elton John and Billie Joe Armstrong impressions FTW!!!

Top Chef upset. About time another reality show gets noticed aside from The Amazing Race.

– Jewel’s wonderful In Memoriam segment.

Modern Family‘s special segment: Stewie Griffin, in 3D, and George Clooney = every bit awesome, every bit WIN!

– And most importantly, MODERN FAMILY wins OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES! Hell mother fuckin’ yeah!

The WHOA.

Lost shutout. BOO.

– Not even Terry O’Quinn, Michael Emerson, or Jack Bender’s Directing?!

Mad Men. Again. Snooze.

– Bryan Cranston. Again. Snore. Although I gotta hand it to the guy. He was charming during his speech and acknowledged that his equally-deserving/forever-snubbed co-nominees might be receiving “You got robbed!” text messages the moment his name was announced.

– Archie Panjabi’s major upset win. Somewhere in Hollywood, I could see Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson breaking down to tears or staging a coup d’etat because of this unexpected circumstance. I like The Good Wife alright, but it’s an injustice that these two Grey’s Anatomy ladies were snubbed over and over and over.

– Television Movie and Miniseries categories. Zzzzz.

– Claire Danes’ sarcastic “ZOMG. Surprise, surprise!” look after she was declared winner.

The 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards Predictions

28 08 2010

As a person who never runs out of things to watch on TV, seeing the annual Primetime Emmy Awards is most certainly a major highlight for me. Year in, year out, I find myself rooting for shows, actors and actresses, and crew members to be recognized for their performances and efforts. Of course this year is, in no way, an exception.

Right off the bat, let me tell you that I am profusely supporting certain shows and personalities. For some, getting nominated is the award, but for others, losing isn’t an option. So here is my take on the 2010 Primetime Emmys happening tomorrow, August 29 in the US (August 30 for us in the Philippines).

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

– Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
– Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm
– Matthew Morrison, Glee
– Tony Shalhoub, Monk
– Steve Carell, The Office
– Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock

Will Win: Tony Shalhoub, Monk

Should Win: Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

The Rundown: Shalhoub is an Academy favorite. He has stolen, errr, taken this honor thrice before. And now he’s back for one last time (at least for the show) since Monk has gone off-air, so they might give it to him. Parsons deserved to win last year. Although I am not a fan of his submission this year (“The Pants Alternative”), him being The Big Bang Theory‘s main man merits this recognition. I would have picked Carell but his submission (“The Cover-Up”) just won’t do it for him. And if he does win, it would be because of his contribution to The Office as a whole, and perhaps his hit movies this year.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

– Lea Michele, Glee
– Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The New Adventures Of Old Christine
– Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
– Amy Poehler, Parks And Recreation
– Tina Fey, 30 Rock
– Toni Collette, United States Of Tara

Will Win: Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

Should Win: Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

The Rundown: Hands down. Falco. She’s just amazing on Nurse Jackie. And she has three Emmys to confirm that the voters like her plenty. Never mind that the show is a dramedy. That didn’t stop Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) and America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) from winning before. So yeah. Falco.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

– Chris Colfer, Glee
– Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
– Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
– Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family
– Ty Burrell, Modern Family
– Jon Cryer, Two And A Half Men

Will Win: Ty Burrell, Modern Family

Should Win: Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family

The Rundown: Both were consistently stellar in Modern Family‘s debut season. Personally, Stonestreet’s portrayal on “Fizbo” is spot on and enough for him to snag the trophy. But Burrell’s impact on the show is huge and undeniable. Too bad, he didn’t submit his strongest tape (he sent in “Up All Night”) that would have eliminated the competition early on. Harris did win two Emmys recently (one for his stint on Glee and the other for his Tony Awards hosting), so giving him a third one won’t be outside the realm of possibility. But the Academy’s lack of support for his show How I Met Your Mother raises the red flag for me. Moreover, given that every nominee’s submission was not edited anymore to show only his scenes, the guys from Modern Family practically have three submissions each. I think that secures the win for either Burrell or Stonestreet.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series

– Jane Lynch, Glee
– Julie Bowen, Modern Family
– Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
– Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live
– Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
– Holland Taylor, Two And A Half Men

Will Win: Jane Lynch, Glee

Should Win: Jane Lynch, Glee

The Rundown: Lynch had me at “Your resentment is delicious.” And even when Julie Bowen made a perfect submission (“My Funky Valentine”) for the category, Lynch is riding on a strong wave of support.

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

Glee (“Director’s Cut – Pilot”), Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan
Modern Family (“Pilot”), Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd
The Office (“Niagara”), Greg Daniels and Mindy Kaling
30 Rock (“Anna Howard Shaw Day”), Matt Hubbard
30 Rock (“Lee Marvin Vs. Derek Jeter”), Tina Fey and Kay Cannon

Will Win: Modern Family (“Pilot”), Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd

Should Win: Modern Family (“Pilot”), Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd

The Rundown: In addition to having an extremely talented cast, Modern Family is known for its brilliant writing. It’s got a tight and gripping pilot episode, filled with both LOL and “awww” moments. Plus, Levitan and Lloyd have a Writers Guild of America award under their belt for this exact episode. I can’t see why it can’t win in this category.

Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series

Glee (“Director’s Cut – Pilot”), Ryan Murphy
Glee (“Wheels”), Paris Barclay
Modern Family (“Pilot”), Jason Winer
Nurse Jackie (“Pilot”), Allen Coulter
30 Rock (“I Do Do”), Don Scardino

Will Win: Glee (“Director’s Cut – Pilot”), Ryan Murphy

Should Win: Glee (“Director’s Cut – Pilot”), Ryan Murphy

The Rundown: This is a category that seems to be fond of pilot episodes, perhaps maybe because of the freshness factor a new show brings to the table. Arrested Development (2004), Desperate Housewives (2005), My Name Is Earl (2006), Ugly Betty (2007), and Pushing Daisies (2008) could attest to that. That leaves us with Glee, Modern Family, and Nurse Jackie. I don’t think Glee will make clean sweep in the major categories come Emmys night (despite having garnered a total of 19 nominations, and one nod for every acting category). And if the Academy is going to reward the most popular new show this season and its creator–no less, this is the safest category to do it in. However, I wouldn’t exactly write Winer off. He did score a Directors Guild of America award for the same episode, after all.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

– Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
– Michael C. Hall, Dexter
– Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
– Hugh Laurie, House
– Matthew Fox, Lost
– Jon Hamm, Mad Men

Will Win: Michael C. Hall, Dexter

Should Win: Michael C. Hall, Dexter

The Rundown: This is going to be a nail-biter. All nominees have a shot at winning. Seriously. They all have good quality materials to get the prize. First-time nominees Chandler and Fox could simply pull an upset. The former finally made it to the list after being snubbed for many years, while the latter provided a baity performance on the big finale of a celebrated TV series. Cranston is a two-time winner (2008 and 2009) for the same role and show. Hamm is always a contender. Why he hasn’t won actually baffles me. But I think it boils down to Laurie and Hall. Laurie has a two-hour showcase episode that screams: “This is my fifth fucken nomination. This is what I can fucken do. If this doesn’t warrant a fucken Emmy, I don’t know what fucken does.” And then there’s Hall, who’s on a winning streak after the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards. Unfortunately, and I’m sure not to his liking, either, his recent battle with cancer will play a part. But make no mistake, he does have an emotionally-charged episode that proved his skills. And since Hall’s show is up for the Drama Series plum, there is probably more support for him than Laurie.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

– Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
– Glenn Close, Damages
– Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights
– Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
– Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
– January Jones, Mad Men

Will Win: Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

Should Win: Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

The Rundown: All the hype and Emmy precursors point to Margulies’ direction. Winning this one will make it a clean sweep for her. Close is, well, Close. And she won the last two years. But I’m pulling for Sedgwick because after five consecutive nods, and her terrific submission this year, she rightfully deserves to finally bring home that golden statuette. Unfortunately, though, The Closer isn’t as well loved as The Good Wife is, so that could work against her.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

– Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad
– Martin Short, Damages
– Terry O’Quinn, Lost
– Michael Emerson, Lost
– John Slattery, Mad Men
– Andre Braugher, Men Of A Certain Age

Will Win: Terry O’Quinn, Lost

Should Win: Michael Emerson, Lost

The Rundown: Emerson’s Ben Linus has infinite depth and his submission (“Dr. Linus”) gives him a full story with a character-redeeming closure. He so deserves a back-to-back win. Going against him, however, are his Lost co-star O’Quinn for convincingly playing two different roles (“The Substitute”) and Paul for his strong performance in a tragic episode (“Half Measures”). I originally picked Braugher to win, but after learning that submissions were not cut down to their own scenes, I felt his exposure on “Powerless” would appear a lot less remarkable.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

– Sharon Gless, Burn Notice
– Rose Byrne, Damages
– Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife
– Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
– Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
– Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men

Will Win: Sharon Gless, Burn Notice

Should Win: Christina Hendricks, Mad Men

The Rundown: Gless is the textbook winner here, being the established veteran with a good, emotional episode for a submission. Yes, Baranski also fits the bill, and is a part of The Good Wife, so it could easily be said that she has this in the bag, as well. Hendricks is a possible alternate with her own buzz and Mad Men pushing her for the win.

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

Friday Night Lights (“The Son”), Rolin Jones
The Good Wife (“Pilot”), Michelle King and Robert King
Lost (“The End”), Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse
Mad Men (“Guy Walks Into An Advertising Agency”), Robin Veith and Matthew Weiner
Mad Men (“Shut The Door. Have A Seat.”), Matthew Weiner and Erin Levy

Will Win: Mad Men (“Shut The Door. Have A Seat.”), Matthew Weiner and Erin Levy

Should Win: Mad Men (“Shut The Door. Have A Seat.”), Matthew Weiner and Erin Levy

The Rundown: I think this is just a matter of choosing between the two entries from the Mad Men train. Possible spoiler is The Good Wife s pilot episode, given that the show is a critically-lauded and highly-rated new drama from a broadcast network.

Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series

Breaking Bad (“One Minute”), Michelle MacLaren
Dexter (“The Getaway”), Steve Shill
Lost (“The End”), Jack Bender
Mad Men (“Guy Walks Into An Advertising Agency”), Lesli Linka Glatter
Treme (“Do You Know What It Means – Pilot”), Agnieszka Holland

Will Win: Lost (“The End”), Jack Bender

Should Win: Lost (“The End”), Jack Bender

The Rundown: I am going with Lost because if the series wins any major category, it’s this one. A send-off present of some sort.

Outstanding Reality – Competition Program

The Amazing Race
American Idol
Dancing With The Stars
Project Runway
Top Chef

Will Win: The Amazing Race

Should Win: The Amazing Race

The Rundown: As much as I want a much needed shake-up in this category, I don’t think TAR is missing it out this year.

Outstanding Comedy Series

Curb Your Enthusiasm
Glee
Modern Family
Nurse Jackie
The Office
30 Rock

Will Win: Modern Family

Should Win: Modern Family

The Rundown: No. Glee isn’t going to win this. And it shouldn’t. If it does, that would be one gigantic, unforgivable mistake. I used to be a big fan of the show, but after its first 13 episodes, it became a bit lame and a lot incoherent. On the other hand, Modern Family continued to churn out hilarious and heartwarming episodes. Every person in the ensemble was given the spotlight at one point or another. And the core of the be-all and end-all of the sitcom’s premise remained intact all throughout the series’ debut season. Not to mention, the show racked up three victories in the recently held Creative Emmy awards for Casting, Editing, and Sound Mixing, so yeah, it is highly-esteemed by the Academy. The only acceptable challenge I consider comes from the three-time defending champ 30 Rock. The four-year-old comedy comes in with its weakest season yet, but made perfect submissions by sending in its strongest episodes. However, in my opinion, this is the year 30 Rock‘s domination ends. And bearing the seamless balance of being a critical darling and a commercial success, Modern Family is all prepped to make this happen.

Outstanding Drama Series

Breaking Bad
Dexter
The Good Wife
Lost
Mad Men
True Blood

Will Win: Mad Men

Should Win: Lost

The Rundown: I’d love to see Lost take this. But I am aware that Mad Men is the overpowering frontrunner. It’s a lock. And it would be a horrendous mistake for Mad Men to lose in what people dub as its best season yet. Lost could possibly spoil it, though, to give one of the most acclaimed shows to ever air a proper farewell. After all, it could not be denied that the show made a significant impact and changed the landscape of television.
